When you leave your current job, you may consider writing a Linkedin Farwell Message. People write these messages to let your connections know you are joining a new company.

As mentioned in my previous post on how to network like a Google executive, it’s essential to devote regular time to building new connections. Still, it’s equally important to maintain healthy relationships with the contacts we have already created. But a common mistake people make in crafting Linkedin Farewell messages is focusing too much time bragging about themselves or their next company and not enough time recognizing those who have helped them in their career.

A well-crafted Linkedin farewell message will highlight the impact your peers and managers have made in your career, which will make you feel grateful for your experience and lift the spirits of your colleagues.

To write a successful Linkedin farewell message, you must keep in mind the following:

    1. Thanking those who have made an impact in your career. Many folks focus on themselves and their impact on others in their farewell message or what they have gotten out of the experience. Few consider thanking those who have helped you in your career, which is a missed opportunity to lift the spirits of your colleagues and leave your former employer on a positive note.
    2. Be Specific about your colleagues’ impact And Make Sure To Tag Them. The thank-you must include something specific your colleagues have done to have a positive impact on your career. Example: Thank you, Rachel for providing me with guidance that pushed my career forward, thank you for always sticking by me, thank you for your clear and impactful feedback.
    3. Mention Your Colleague’s Effort. Acknowledge the effort it took for your colleagues to help you.  Example: You went out of your way to finish this project on the weekend.
    4. Demonstrate Their Impact. Tell your colleague the impact their help had on your career. Example: Franked provided me with vital career coaching that helped me push through challenging times in my career.
    5. Thank your company for the privilege of working for them. Yes, they hired you due to your performance
    6. Tell your colleagues where you are going next and how they can stay in touch with you.  Odds are you are active on LinkedIn, but if you’re active on another platform, you might want to mention where they can find you.
    7. Don’t brag about where you are going or insult your former employer. It’s natural to be excited about your new employer, but you shouldn’t brag about your new opportunity or insult your former employer.

    Template for a farewell message

    Hey Everyone!

After working X wonderful years at (insert here: current company), I’m leaving to start my newest adventure at (new company) working as (insert role). This was a hard decision to make because I loved working at (current company).

But before I leave, I want you to know that I appreciate the opportunity to work at (current company). (Insert here what makes the company special and what you will miss about it) I will never forget the amazing backgrounds my colleagues share, the unique challenges we went through, and the fun times I’ve had.

I would especially like to thank (insert colleague’s name) for (mentorship, support, etc., and be as detailed as you can when explaining their impact without sharing private information). (And anyone else who has made a meaningful impact on our career)

Thank you all for being great colleagues! I look forward to seeing you all again!

Please stay in touch with me on Linkedin (or if you aren’t active on Linkedin mention the other mediums they can contact you. I highly suggest you DO NOT list your personal email or phone.)

    Sincerely,
    (Your Name)
